2013/12/14: Famous Canadians

Writing about Canadian Culture earlier in this blog, I said: “When Canadians are looking for something “unique”, in fact they are looking for something separating from America.” Many Canadians don’t know it, but there are lot of “unique” Canadian things and people – and I’m not talking about South Park’s Terrance and Phillip! The music synthesizer, basketball, air-conditioned railway coaches, kerosene and the Java computer language have all been invented in Canada!

You thought everything you see in Hollywood movies has been shot in the States? No! What seems to be New York is often Toronto (look here for a list of films shot in Toronto); what seems to be Chicago is often Winnipeg; and what seems to be California is often Vancouver or the area around.

Do you know any famous Canadians? Yes, you do! But so far you thought they were Americans. Believe it or not, all these actors, musicians etc. are Canadians:

Arcade Fire
Pamela Anderson
Avril Lavigne
Bryan Adams
Sum 41
Michael Bublé
Alanis Morissette
Leonard Cohen
Shania Twain
Neil Young
Bachman–Turner Overdrive
Billy Talent
Nickelback
Steppenwolf
Terry Fox
Jim Carrey
Céline Dion
Frank Gehry
Paul Anka
Dan Aykroyd
Justin Bieber
Michael J. Fox
Lorne Greene
Leslie Nielsen
Donald Sutherland
Kiefer Sutherland
Cobie Smulders
Gilles Villeneuve
Jacques Villeneuve
Tim Horton
Frank Stronach
Alexander Graham Bell
Joseph-Armand Bombardier
Margaret Atwood
Alice Munro
Bret Hart

Probably to be continued…
