2013/08/09: Goodbye, Jasper

Finally: blue sky, sunshine, perfect mountain weather. Now that I have to leave Jasper and its national park, the conditions would be perfect for another long hiking tour, the views from the mountains would be much better than in the last days. Anyway, I had a great time here. And I have to do the laundry now.
The clothes are already cleaned, the dryer does its best to dry my jeans and pullovers, other people are waiting for their clothes to be cleaned, drinking coffee, eating cakes, having chats – when suddenly all washing machines and driers stop and the lights get Power blackout. It will last for some hours. My clothes are almost dry, that’s ok. But how to buy food and water for the train ride if the supermarkets are suddenly closed? Where to get cash when the ATMs don’t work anymore? Wow, a world without electricity is really difficult to manage. Two hours after all lights turned off most shops are still closed, no hot coffee, no gasoline, nearly nothing available. I’m sure, the local newspaper will report about the blackout tomorrow – if the printing machines will work again.
It seemed as If this power shortage would be today’s highlight – then the Canadian left Jasper. Forget all railway tracks I run on in the last weeks, forget Transsiberian Railway and California Zephyr: the route of the Canadian between Jasper, Yellowhead Pass and Valemount is spectacular, one of the most beautiful train rides in the world. I’ll stop writing and let the pictures speak for themselves:
